Whether you've been collecting Avios through your British Airways Executive Club or you've just spotted a balance on your credit card statement, you are probably wondering: how many Avios do I actually need to book a flight?

The short answer is: it depends on the route, the cabin, and when you fly. This guide breaks all of that down so you can work out exactly where you stand.

How Avios Pricing Works

Unlike many loyalty programmes that use fixed redemption tiers based on airline zones, Avios uses a distance-based model. The further you fly, the more Avios you need, but the relationship isn't perfectly linear. Shorter hops tend to offer disproportionately good value, while very long-haul routes can rack up points quickly, especially after the December 2025 pricing changes.

Your total cost when redeeming Avios for a reward flight is always two parts:

  • Avios: the points component, covering the base fare
  • Cash: taxes, carrier charges, and fees paid separately

The cash component varies considerably. On short-haul European flights, taxes are generally low, often under £50 each way. On long-haul routes, particularly transatlantic, surcharges can exceed £400 return and are worth factoring in before you book.

One more thing that affects how many points you need: peak vs off-peak pricing. British Airways operates a two-tier calendar. Off-peak dates cost fewer Avios for the same seat, so flexibility on travel dates can make a real difference.

How Many Avios Do You Need? A Route-by-Route Breakdown

Short-Haul Europe

Examples: London to Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid

Short-haul is where Avios deliver their best value, particularly in economy. In economy (Euro Traveller), expect to pay around 8,000 Avios off-peak or 11,000 Avios during peak periods for a one-way seat. If you want to fly in business class (Club Europe), that rises to around 16,000 Avios off-peak or 22,000 during peak.

Cash taxes on these routes are low, which keeps the overall cost of redemption competitive.

Medium-Haul

Examples: London to the Canary Islands, Egypt, Türkiye

One-way economy seats on medium-haul routes start at around 14,000 Avios off-peak and 19,250 during peak. Business class on the same routes costs approximately 28,000 Avios off-peak or 38,500 at peak.

Long-Haul

Examples: London to New York, the Caribbean, Dubai

This is where the Avios requirement climbs significantly, and where the cash surcharge becomes a more important part of the equation.

In economy (World Traveller), a one-way seat costs around 26,500 Avios off-peak or 36,250 during peak. Premium economy (World Traveller Plus) runs to approximately 47,500 off-peak or 66,000 at peak. Business class (Club World) sits at around 96,250 Avios off-peak or 132,000 at peak. First Class requires approximately 165,000 Avios off-peak or 220,000 during peak periods.

On top of those Avios, expect to pay £400–£600 in cash taxes and carrier charges on a return long-haul booking.

Ultra Long-Haul

Examples: London to Australia, Japan, South America

For the longest routes, economy seats start at around 40,000 Avios off-peak or 55,000 at peak. Business class on these routes is significantly more, starting at approximately 160,000 Avios off-peak or 220,000 during peak periods.

Peak vs Off-Peak: Why Your Travel Dates Matter

British Airways publishes an annual peak and off-peak calendar that directly affects how many Avios a seat costs. The same seat on the same route can cost up to 37% more Avios during peak periods — which broadly align with school holidays, bank holidays, and the summer travel season.

If your dates are flexible, shifting your trip by even a few days can save you 5,000–10,000 Avios on a single leg. It's worth checking BA's peak calendar before committing to dates.

Flying with Partner Airlines

Avios aren't limited to British Airways flights. As part of the oneworld alliance, your Executive Club balance can also be used on Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Qatar Airways — often with better value than equivalent BA redemptions.

Iberia is particularly strong for transatlantic routes via Madrid. Economy fares to the Americas frequently require fewer Avios than the BA equivalent, and carrier charges tend to be lower.

Aer Lingus offers some of the best Avios value for transatlantic travel. A one-way economy seat from Dublin to New York typically costs in the region of 13,000–15,000 Avios, making it one of the standout redemptions in the whole Avios ecosystem.

Qatar Airways is bookable via Avios for long-haul routes, with a premium product that's hard to beat in business class. Availability can be limited, but when it's there it's worth considering.

Partner airline pricing operates on its own distance bands, so costs may differ from the BA figures above.

How Many Avios Do You Need for an Upgrade?

If you've already booked a cash fare, you can use Avios to move up a cabin rather than booking a full reward flight. Upgrade costs vary based on your fare type, route, and the cabin you're moving to.

As a rough guide, a short-haul upgrade to Club Europe starts from around 7,500 Avios each way. A long-haul upgrade to Club World starts from around 50,000 Avios each way, though this varies considerably by route. Upgrading to First on long-haul typically starts from around 100,000 Avios each way.

Only certain fare types are eligible, so it's worth checking via the BA manage booking tool or calling them directly before planning around it.

What If You Don't Have Enough Avios?

This is where many people get stuck. You've found the route, checked availability, done the maths, and you're short. Here are your main options:

Top up through everyday spending. Avios-earning credit cards let you build your balance through regular purchases. Useful long-term, but slow if you need points quickly.

Transfer from other programmes. American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Avios at a 1:1 ratio. Marriott Bonvoy transfers at 3:1, with a bonus 5,000 Avios for every 60,000 Bonvoy points moved across.

Use Avios part-payment. BA lets you mix Avios with cash on many bookings, so a smaller balance can still reduce what you pay rather than sitting unused.

Buy Avios through The Miles Market. If you need a meaningful volume of points quickly, The Miles Market lets you purchase Avios competitively with transparent pricing and no hidden fees. Whether you're topping off a balance for a business class redemption or building from scratch for a family trip, it's worth getting a quote before going direct through BA.

And if you're on the other side, holding a large Avios balance you're unlikely to use, you can sell your Avios through The Miles Market and convert them into cash before they expire.
